PRESS RELEASE: VIACOM NICKELODEON CONSUMER PRODUCTS PARTNERS WITH TRASHCODE®
First-of-its-kind agreement seeks to create sustainable licensed products made with recycled plastic bottles
London, UK – 09 October 2018 – Viacom Nickelodeon Consumer Products (VNCP) agreed a partnership with TRASHCODE®, the new venture between licensed apparel and accessories leader, Cookie Company Group and sustainable textile pioneer, Waste2Wear. TRASHCODE® enables retailers to offer apparel and accessories made from recycled plastic bottles in combination with other sustainable materials. VNCP’s multi-year, pan-Europe, Middle East and Africa deal for apparel, accessories and home furnishings with TRASHCODE® is a first for the character licensing industry, and VNCP is in active discussions with its retail partners to produce its character apparel ranges with TRASHCODE® materials.
VNCP’s creative team produced prototypes of SpongeBob SquarePants t-shirts made with TRASHCODE® materials, and the ‘inspiration’ pieces will be showcased at Brand Licensing Show, 9 – 11 October, at the Viacom Nickelodeon Stand: National Hall – D10.
“We have a long-standing relationship with Cookie Company Group, and when they came to us about TRASHCODE®, we knew we needed to be a launch partner,” said Mark Kingston, Senior Vice President, International, Viacom/Nickelodeon Consumer Products. “Viacom Nickelodeon have a history of bringing awareness to pro-social causes, and at VNCP, we want to do our part to help create a more sustainable licensing industry. Brand Licensing Show is the perfect opportunity to engage with retail partners about this important topic.”
TRASHCODE® offers a product range made with Waste2Wear fabrics using Recycled PET bottles (R-PET). This special process transforms post-consumer plastic bottles into high quality textiles. TRASHCODE® products can be made 100% from R-PET or in combination with other sustainable materials such as certified organic cotton to create a wide range of products: from swimwear and accessories, to t-shirts and nightwear.
Kingston continued: “2019 is SpongeBob SquarePants’ 20th Anniversary, and he is an ideal character to illustrate TRASHCODE®’s mission of high-quality sustainable products in the licensing industry. The SpongeBob 20th ‘inspiration’ t-shirts we created are not only high-quality, but they also highlight the number of recycled plastic bottles used to create the garment. This messaging will accompany all TRASHCODE® products, and we believe it will connect consumers to their choice to buy sustainable.”
Sabine Hulsman, CEO of the Cookie Company Group, added: “On average, a children’s shirt made with R-PET has given a new life to five to eight discarded plastic bottles. A Jacket made out of R-PET fabrics can take up to forty plastic bottles out of the environment. Consumers increasingly expect, or even demand, that their products are produced in a sustainable way, and TRASHCODE® gives them a great, high-quality choice.”
